Granite

ORIGIN
Granite is an igneous rock, which is formed under high heat (from lava) and becomes a crystalline after the lava cools within the earths core. Granite is quarried throughout the world, with the majority imported from Italy, China, Brazil and India.

USE OF GRANITE AS FABRICATED SLABS OR TILES

Using a granite slab will give the most consistent and desirable look to your countertop. There are different thickness levels to the slabs and different quality based on its solidity and origin. Slab prices can range anywhere between 300 – 1400 per slab. The size of a slab can vary between 4’-5’6” wide by 7’-9’ long.

If you decide to use granite tiles to cut down on the price, you must be careful and choose the ‘static’ variety, which has very little movement. You do not want the tiles to look ‘unmatched’. You should also use a tinted grout for a seamless appearance. Be aware that the thickness of the Granite tile is only ¼” compared to the thickness of the slab that can vary between 5/8” – 1 ¼”. This has a substantial effect on the counter top's strength and durability.

PROS AND CONS OF GRANITE

Pros:

  • Unique: No two slabs are the same. It is important to have our project managers choose the slabs with you, especially when more than one slab is needed for your project.
  • Adds value to your home, should you decide to sell
  • Hot items – such as pans – can be placed on the countertop without the worry of burning the surface
  • Cutting directly on a granite countertop will not scratch the surface (although it will dull your knives)

Cons:

  • Since it is a porous stone, stains can be a problem, if not caught quickly; however, there are also sealers that can prevent staining from becoming an issue.
  • It can crack if hit with a large heavy item and will have to be replaced. A granite slab cannot be fixed once it is cracked.
  • Extremely heavy, so there is a need for additional support
